SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Assists in improving production, efficiency and company profitability through improving herd heath status and bio-security.
Create, supervise and coordinate herd health programs that will enhance productivity
Provide real-time on-site veterinary support to all aspects of swine production
Provide expertise in diagnosis and trouble shooting; perform post mortem necropsy examinations
Monitor and implement procedures that will enhance bio-security to ensure high health status
Fully integrate efforts / activities within the framework and consistent with the direction of the production management team and veterinary team
Ensure communication, efforts and activities are aligned with the direction of the production team’s goals and are directed toward system-wide optimization
Lead and direct system practices to ensure animal movement and testing requirements are being completed consistent with state and federal regulatory requirements
Ensure both the pork industry and Company objectives, standards, and initiatives are carried out at the regional level including administration of health plans, disease/pathogen monitoring, PQA/ TQA measures, food safety, and animal welfare policy
Assist with coordination of health SOP’s with production managers and other health specialists
Understand all certification requirements and is responsible for getting all production managers and specialists exposed to the required standards for assessment
Provide timely, accurate reports, documentation and data to internal/external customers.
Monitor production capabilities to ensure optimum performance standards through biosecurity, system design, health improvement initiatives, and genetics
Conduct Pork and Transport Quality Assurance Training as needed
Mentor, direct, and coach designated production and veterinary support staff
Establish and maintain relationships with academics, animal health and political/health organizations
Evaluate new technologies/products as they impact production and animal health
DVM degree with an emphasis in Swine Medicine
Advanced education (M.S. or Ph.D.) preferred
Min of 5 years’ experience in veterinary medicine and swine health, preferable in large systems
Ability to work with people in a team environment
Able and willing to get licensure in Utah, Idaho, Arizona and California
Excellent communication (Verbal and Written), organizational and analytical skills
Must be able to collect, record, and analyze diagnostic data
Proven working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Must be available to work at least a 40-hour week; average 8-hour day; weekend and holiday work required as needed; must be available for occasional travel
