REPORTS TO: Medical Coordinator (in general) Executive Director/Board of Directors (Compliance with Laws, Regulations, Policies)
The Veterinarian is responsible for providing the leadership and direction for the medical and surgical care of animals in the shelter; is responsible for the day-to-day health of animals in the shelter; and works to ensure for the health of the population. This includes triage and stabilizing ill and injured animals (including being on-call, as needed), diagnosing and treating a wide variety of medical conditions, anesthetizing animals, as needed, and performing surgery. The Veterinarian must be willing to work with a wide variety of species, focusing mainly on dogs, cats, and rabbits. The Veterinarian advises on placement and euthanasia decisions. The Veterinarian also oversees and trains the medical staff, such as veterinary technicians and assistants, including volunteers with medical backgrounds who provide assistance, as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Medical/Surgical Care of Shelter Animals and Low cost spay neuter on feral/owned cats
- Oversees all health-related aspects of care for sheltered animals and former shelter (client) animals including but not limited to disease prevention programs, routine health care, vaccinations, testing and treatments.
- Recognizes, manages and treats a wide variety of medical conditions, with a particular focus on infectious diseases.
- Collects appropriate samples and performs and/or requests appropriate laboratory tests, including decapitation for rabies testing, if needed. Interprets laboratory data and reads radiographs.
- Performs veterinary health-care functions including the examination and treatment of sheltered animals and former shelter (client) animals. Aids in the evaluation of the disposition of sheltered animals, as needed.
- Performs routine surgery, focusing primarily on high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter on an as needed basis, and including the administration and monitoring of anesthesia.
- Compliance with Laws, Regulations, Policies, and Guidelines
- Works cooperatively with the executive director and board of directors in the development and implementation of goals, policies and procedures related to the veterinary practice of the shelter.
- Oversees controlled substances and establishes and maintains medical record and drug use logs to standards of veterinary and sheltering practices; ensures that records are in order and complete.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of shelter-animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion-animal health issues.
- Assists in determining the disposition of animals in the care of the BCHS according to standard medical procedures and legal requirements.
- Personnel Management
- Directs veterinary technicians, assistants, and volunteers in the daily performance of their duties.
- Attends necessary meetings with other staff to ensure effective communication and adherence to procedures and standards.
- Ability to work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, and management throughout the organization.
- Customer Relations
- Builds effective relationships through positive interaction and communication with the community, volunteers and staff.
- Consults with clients and/or veterinarians regarding animals at or from the BCHS.
- Ensures that quality care is provided to clients, staff and volunteers. Consults with clients as needed.
- Provides input toward the formulation of the annual budget involving medical care.
- Other duties as assigned or as required meeting the on-going needs of the organization.
Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Medicine from an accredited institution or equivalent; a valid Pennsylvania Veterinary License; a valid PA driver's license; a valid DEA license; a commitment to animal welfare; a working knowledge of companion animal care and adoption issues; previous clinical experience, particularly in shelters; and a minimum of three (3) years working in a fast-paced veterinary setting.
