SoBran, Inc. is seeking a Senior Laboratory Animal Technician to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (Building 14BS).
OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Senior Laboratory Animal Technician for the NIH, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals.
Description of Duties:
Perform duties of Laboratory Animal Technician
Supervise and direct daily activities of technical personnel to ensure that all required functions are carried out appropriately, including receiving animals, handling and restraint, health surveillance, equipment maintenance, supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, and other contract-related duties.
Assist with training technical personnel according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Schedule technical procedures and assign daily activities to personnel performing technical procedures
Read and understand technical requirements stated in Animal Study Protocols (ASPs) and discern discrepancies between technical requests and ASPs
Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are adhered to by the technical staff and suggest modifications to supervisor
Perform procedures requiring various levels of biohazard containment
Participate in interviews and selection of technical personnel
Collaboratively work with investigators to establish and maintain breeding colonies
Ability to work flexible hours as needed to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out in compliance with appropriate timelines
Perform regular QA of all facility aspects and participate in the program wide QA team
Willingness to work in dedicated biocontainment areas handling various biological or chemical agents. Ability to maintain balance, full range of body motions, and physical agility while wearing required protective equipment, including Tyvek protective coveralls
Familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in the work area
Assist in any contract related activity, as assigned by your supervisor, to complete the required work to include assisting with cage wash duties
Weekend, holiday, and after-hours work is required as necessary to meet operational needs of the work site
Always think safety first when performing daily duties
Wear uniforms and appropriate clothing and equipment as identified by the work area and PPE as defined by standard operating procedure (SOP), animal study proposal (ASP), and the Safety Department
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal rooms, animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
Ability to comfortably lift 50 lbs.
Stand or walk continuously up to 6 hours per day
Kneel, bend, squat, push, pull and reach or lift overhead
Use hands for simple grasping, pushing or pulling, and repetitive or fine manipulations frequently
Work in a controlled laboratory environment under a variety of temperature and humidity conditions
Perform other duties, as assigned
Work Schedule: All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. Weekend work is required as scheduled. The weekend/holiday hours are from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm (no more than 8 hours per day). In addition, you may be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed.
Education Required: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or be currently eligible for the certification and become certified within 10 months of obtaining the position.
Three years of experience in a laboratory animal facility, leadership experience preferred
Must have experience in such specialty areas as rodent, ferrets, guinea pigs and other regulated species, timed matings, species-specific technical procedures, barrier management, understanding of facilities management, and data management
Must have a working knowledge of all levels of biohazard containment. Experience working in an ABSL2/3 environment is a plus
Must be able to complete a background investigation through the National Agency Check and Inquiries (ANACI)
Must have proficiency in MS Word/ Excel and email applications. Must have a proficient technical and scientific vocabulary
Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of Senior Laboratory Animal Technician
