Purpose of Position: Provide overnight medical care and treatment for animals.
Manage overnight treatment and care of critical patients and other shelter animals.
Monitor the shelter’s night kennels for animals that require immediate attention.
Triage overnight emergencies including providing in-shelter treatment, transfer to ER facility, or euthanasia.
Place IVC, calculate drug dosages and fluid rates.
Perform physical examination and provide treatment for animals flagged as needing medical attention.
Feed and monitor neonatal animals as needed.
Work with foster department and foster parents to triage overnight emergencies.
Perform data entry to update animal records.
Collect samples for testing and perform laboratory tests.
Vaccinate shelter animals as needed.
Administer anesthesia and monitor animals under anesthesia.
Assist veterinarians in medical and surgical procedures. This includes using proper restraint.
Provide medical assistance and counseling to patrons.
Complete cleaning and administrative projects as assigned.
Contribute to and lead initiatives to improve processes and procedures.
Use and maintain medical equipment.
Clean and maintain work areas.
Previous experience in a veterinary technician position.
Working knowledge of current veterinary practices
Comfortable triaging emergencies independently with assistance on-call veterinarian by phone.
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
High attention to detail
Certified veterinary technician
Experience in an animal welfare environment
